Dr. Yosuke Uchitomi has been a leading figure in the development of psycho-oncology in Japan since 1995, when he became the founding Chief of the Department of Psycho-Oncology at the National Cancer Center. Following the enactment of the Basic Act on Cancer Control in 2007, he has played a central role in organizing both basic (3-hour) and advanced (10-hour) communication skills training workshops for oncologists—not only across Japan but also in Korea and Taiwan. More recently, his work has focused on reducing disparities in cancer care through patient support initiatives using prompt question lists and by promoting cancer screening among individuals with mental illness.
