Michelle B. Riba, MD, MS, is Clinical Professor and Director of the PsychOncology Program at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center. She formerly served as Associate Chair for Education and Academic Affairs, Residency Program Director, and Program Director of the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Michigan, and Associate Director of the University of Michigan Eisenberg Family Depression Center.
Dr. Riba earned her medical degree from the University of Connecticut, where she also completed a psychiatry residency. She earned her masters of science degree in organic chemistry from St. John’s University in New York. She is board-certified consultation-liaison and general adult psychiatry.
Dr. Riba’s clinical and research interests focus on the field of psycho-oncology, particularly collaborative treatment issues in psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, and distress screening in patients with cancer as well as college mental health As the author or editor of over 200 scientific articles, books, chapters and scientific abstracts, Dr. Riba has advanced both research and discussion in these important areas.
Dr. Riba served on the editorial board of Psychiatric Services and the editorial advisory board of the American Psychiatric Press, Inc. She is an ad-hoc reviewer for PsychoOncology, Academic Psychiatry, Psychiatric Services, Journal of Practical Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, and Psychosomatic Medicine. Dr. Riba is past-president of the American Psychiatric Association, the Association for Academic Psychiatry, and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training. She served as the World Psychiatry Association’s Secretary for Scientific Publications.
Dr. Riba is Chair of the NCCN Distress Management Panel and a member of the NCCN Cancer-Related Fatigue Panel. She also serves on the editorial board for JNCCN—Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
